Each year on June 19, we pause to recognize the birthday of one of the most respected and storied forces in the United States Army: the U.S. Army Rangers.
The Rangers represent more than a military unit. They represent a standard. Courage, discipline, physical toughness, mental resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the mission have defined Rangers from their earliest days to the modern 75th Ranger Regiment. Their motto, “Rangers Lead the Way,” is not simply a phrase. It is a promise.
The modern Ranger legacy traces its roots to World War II, when the U.S. Army recognized the need for highly trained, fast-moving, specialized infantry capable of conducting dangerous missions behind enemy lines and under extreme conditions. Under the leadership of Maj. William O. Darby, the first Ranger units were formed and trained to meet that challenge. These early Rangers helped establish a tradition of aggressive leadership, adaptability, and selfless service that continues to shape the force today.
From the battlefields of World War II to Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, and countless missions around the world, Rangers have repeatedly been called upon when the mission required precision, endurance, and courage under fire. Their history is written in sacrifice, professionalism, and an uncommon willingness to go first.
But the Ranger birthday is not only about remembering famous operations or historic battles. It is also about honoring the individual Ranger: the Soldier who trains relentlessly, who carries the weight of the mission and the team, who understands that excellence is not optional, and who lives by a creed that demands the highest standards in every action.
It is also a day to recognize Ranger families, veterans, Gold Star families, and all those who have supported the Ranger community across generations. Behind every Ranger is a network of sacrifice, resilience, and quiet strength.
On June 19, we honor the Rangers who came before, the Rangers serving today, and the Rangers who will carry the legacy forward. Their history reminds us that leadership is earned, courage is tested, and service is measured not by words but by action.
Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Rangers.
Rangers Lead the Way.
